S.B.I.G.: mock-u-rapper

what is a mock-u-rapper, you ask? well, someone has come up with toy animals that will play back your recorded message in a crazy rap chant! Record a quick three seconds of any message, then hear your message played back in crazy rap fashion. (found in the sharper image catalog.)

Branch studio

Meg Morley from Branch introduced us to their great studio located in Pontiac, Michigan. They make hand carved faux bois pieces, as well as other outdoor sculptures and garden art. We are amazed at how detailed they are. Meg explained that they start with a steel welded frame that is covered with galvanized steel lath. Then layers of concrete and mortar are applied and hand carved. See more at their website. (thanks meg!)

Vaughan lighting

As seen in the latest "O" at HOME magazine, I spotted this gorgeous twig floor lamp by Vaughan Designs. Doing a little more clicking, I found other amazing lighting that they have done as well- These sconces are stunning...(although I suspect also very expensive... but we can drool...)

Dearest Kelly...

Dearest Kelly,
So we were deep into our Fall issue of
Vogue when we caught that little tidbit you revealed about dabbling in woodgrain for your Spring 07 line of bedding. You go girl! and we mean it. We've been waiting and knew all along that you too were a fellow woodnut. So much brilliance!! Well, just wanted to let you know that we're here for you Kel in case you needed our 2 cents ;)
Big hug,
Em & Jon

SBIG: Rubber woodgrain mats?

Happy Friday! Well, we find ourselves struggling with these mats. We could really go either way. It's kinda bad, but at the same time- really good. So I guess it qualifies for So Bad It's Good? But really I'm kinda leaning more towards the good... but I think it depends on what you do with it. If this was in a contemporary setting, say on cement floors- this would be awesome! What do you guys think? However, I have no idea why they are called "7th Heaven"... and you just gotta love the photo with the pleated turquoise pants and white orthopedic shoes....SEXY! (er...kinda.)

monsterism

these woodland monsters are about as scary as the wonderful giant walking tree people in Lord of the Rings. my favorite is this ranger with his banjo, xtra long sleeve, bushy beard and log bucket hat. his buddy farm girl zips around on her log skateboard. check out the faux bois world of woodland at monsterism.net or to see them in real life, visit meltdown comics on sunset blvd.

my final LV post ... these sheer spring-time fabric panels. they're not just pretty, but fresh and romantic - sort of like a luxurious canopy bed for dining! you can find this special room at the Fin, a contemporary chinese restaurant at the Mirage Hotel.

cake mountain at felt club

This weekend I finally made it to Felt Club at Meltdown Comics. Pretty cool crafty stuff, the art of James Jarvis, and a workshop for spinning your own yarn! I even bumped into Gregory from AT:LA. These bags from Cake Mountain were a trip - they are "20+ year old naugahyde that is imprinted with a wood grain pattern" according to Cake Mountain. Nice update to a retro look! I also bought a DIY skirt kit by Susan Stars. The next Felt Club will be in Echo Park at The Echo. Great place to stock up on fun gifts.

SBIG: Wynn sconce

Though it's hard to see in the photo, we have this prefectly twirled vine/branch/twig sconce from the Wynn Hotel. Dozens of them line the path through the shops. They are massive, are a super decadent gold, and placed higher up to create a very grand effect. I was trying to like it, but it felt a bit clunky, maybe it was the proportions, I couldn't pin point it. I do, however, admire the very natural branch end detail at the ends of the sconce. that's vegas for you...

Corsa Menu

On a recent trip to Las Vegas we noticed an abundance of faux bois. If you have a true crush on woodgrain, I guarantee you'll notice next time you go. These were the menu and biz card at Corsa Cucina, a amazing Mediterranian restaurant at the Wynn Hotel. Really pretty menu and delicious and interesting food. We had the duck fettucini and the pureed mushroom pizza with a big red wine. Yum. Good times!

metal branches

Right next to Plastica and Aero&Co. on Third St. is New Stone Age. First of all, this is my favorite block on Third St. here in LA. If I need a cool conversation piece gift, I always find something. On my last visit, I found these metal branches from New Stone Age. There is something about glorified mundane objects. Like it makes one appreciate the actual object more. I bought my own in silver.

Foxy & Winston at Magpie

I adore this woodgrain bear with squirrel card by Foxy & Winston. It figures that owner Jane Buck is a trained textile designer. Her shapes are filled with wonderful patterns like woodgrain of course! I made my purchase when I was visiting Boston at a most excellent indie craft shop called Magpie. Recommended by my friend Ruchi, it's a must visit mecca for all craftistas.

smokes like a chimney

Ok, it's supposed to be like the bronchi of the lungs, but I think it totally looks more like a tree. Either way, its pretty clever and designed by Andersson Frida and James Steiner. From Industreal.
